1. Controls and UI

When it comes to virtual reality, most experiences fail to impress because they are very difficult to navigate and interact. User generally feels stuck in the VR world unable to go further. Making it easy to navigate in the VR world will improve the experience by a million times. Also, a regular menu system will not work for VR. Developers should come up with something innovative to impress the users.

2. Tutorial Scenes

Unlike regular games, users have to be taught how to play or watch the VR experience. This part is really important as user may lose interest and quit if he/she doesn’t understand what they are experiencing. Making a 360-degree tutorial video, that can be played inside the VR world as part of the experience is a must for VR games. Also, a tutorial stage where users are guides to perform action must be added. This is the most important one of the VR design principles to be taken very seriously by the developers.

3. Don’t make player dizzy

As the character inside the VR world moves and the person playing the game doesn’t move in real world, it could lead to dizziness and nauseating feeling. In order to help the users play, the movement should be minimized and the speed of movement should not be very sudden. Movement scenes must be added with stationary interactions at regular intervals so that the player can play continuously without feeling dizzy.

4. Design for the Target device

Every VR device has different hardware. It is better if the target device is decided in advance and the experience is built based on that. You can always export it to other devices with minimal changes. Also, the user interface and controls have to be planned based on the features available in the target device.

5. Surround sound

User in a VR experience gets completely immersed into the VR world. Sound is a very important factor that determines where the events are happening, and guides user. VR experience must be complemented with equally good surround sound experience. In a VR world user feels a presence in it. If the sound isn’t good then the user will feel like being in a noisy room. Future of VR games is looking good with more and more standalone headset coming in the market. People will be ready to try out VR games as it no longer requires high config PC wired to the headset.
